Widget with standard SQL Query to Grid

Hi Guys

I'm fairly new to this, so bear with me - I know that all the widgets currently use XML and web services to collect their data, but what if I just wanted to select some data from the local database and display it in a grid in a widget? Now I know that I can just do the code as per normal, but this presumably means that it is no longer asynchronous? That is, if I do this on one of my widgets it could take a while for the page to load.

So what if I wanted to do it asynchronously? Do I have to make a web service which returns some XML data to the widget to be displayed on a gird? Or is there some other easy way to do this that i'm not thinking of?

Thoughts are appreciated.

Its pretty simple actually, just add an ajax timer :)

You can refer to the horoscope or flicker component, they actually get data during an async postback.

Do note however that if you were to enable viewstate, the returned data will be huge...
